Welcome to Bishop Smith
Beloved People of St. Martin’s,
Last week in this space I spoke to you about the idea of living a Eucharistically-shaped life, one shaped by the actions of taking, blessing, breaking open, and giving. This week I first want to talk to you about the final of those four actions: giving.
I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a quick update on our annual giving campaign. We currently have received 130 pledges, and our currently total pledged for 2019 now stands at $320,388.00, move than $20,000 above our pledge goal.
This represents a huge step forward in faith for the life of this parish as well as those we serve in the wider world. If you have already pledged, thank you from the bottom of my heart—your financial support is vital to the mission and ministry of this parish. What a blessing! If you have not yet pledged, this is just to let you know that it is not too late to pledge for 2019!
And speaking of blessings…
This weekend we will have a single service on Sunday morning at 9 am as we welcome the Tenth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri, the Rt. Rev. George Wayne Smith, to our worship for his final scheduled episcopal visitation as our bishop, having announced his desire to retire in April 2020 after serving this diocese since June of 2002.
We will be truly blessed that Bishop Smith will be our Celebrant at the Rite of Baptism, Confirmation, and Reception at 9 am, welcoming a new Christian and eleven new Episcopalians, assisted by myself and our priest associate, the Rev. Sally Weaver.
Immediately after our service, please join us in Park Hall to enjoy brunch and cake with the bishop, as he discusses with us the search and transition process for the Eleventh Bishop of Missouri and the current state of the Episcopal Church, as well as taking questions.
He will then meet with the vestry and clergy in Upper Laird as part of his visitation.
Please join with me in welcoming Bishop Smith—and the family and friends of our baptismal candidate and those being received and confirmed– to St. Martin’s on this happy occasion! I am so happy to be able to show you all off!
